Swine research

Provimi’s swine research rests on two strong pillars. On the fundamental side, problem areas such as sow fertility, mortality at birth, health at weaning, and meat quality are studied with modern tools, and based on this innovative solutions are developed that attack problems at their roots.
As a practical example, the quality/nature of starch is typically ignored in feed formulations. Provimi research has carefully characterized how starch quality affects animal performance (through effects on insulin and hind-gut fermentation) and based on this has set formulation guidelines. To complement this, Provimi also developed state-of-the-art tools for characterizing the nutritional value of starch in raw materials. The resultant package allows feed producers to characterize raw materials, better value them in their rations, and obtain better animal performance (higher intakes, leaner gain).

On the applied side, novel ingredients, additives, and nutritional programmes are tested in one of our commercially-focused research facilities. These facilities are strategically located in our key markets around the globe and set up according to local production practices, such that results can be applied to the local market without additional testing. Globally, four large-scale (>500 animals each) tests start each week. This research allows us to push economic performance by incorporating more cost-effective ingredients/additives and/or by fine-tuning requirements of modern animals.
As a practical example, when lactose prices soared, the benefits of lactose as well as alternatives were tested in each of Provimi’s research facility. This resulted in solutions that were locally optimized but also greatly enhanced understanding of both lactose and its alternatives that will serve in future ingredient crises.

Rescue deck
We have introduced the rescue deck and rescue milk concept for at risk piglets in Europe in 2008. It is currently sold in seven European countries. Provimi’s unique concept was awarded the ”Neuheit des Jahres 2009” award from the Deutsche Landwirtschaftsverlag and the Gold Medal for Innovation, La Semana Porcina de Lorca (SEPOR), Murcia, Spain.
