Provimi is working to reduce the carbon footprint of dairy and beef

Ruminants have the unique ability to convert resources that we cannot otherwise use into highly nutritious meat and dairy foods, but are also associated with the production of greenhouse gases. Consumers in premium markets are increasingly asking that their food be produced with the lowest possible environmental impact.

Provimi is conducting research to reduce the production of methane by dairy cows and beef cattle. Improvements in animal husbandry and nutrition can contribute to a smaller carbon footprint. High quality animal feed generally increases animal productivity and decreases the amount of greenhouse gases emitted per kilogram of product. The impact of diet composition on methane production is the main focus of our research.

With appropriate investment in research and development, such as Provimi’s work with partners in Brazil, the Netherlands and elsewhere, significant reduction in the current carbon footprint of meat and milk production may be possible.
